In the poster you can see below, Phoenix is dressed in his full Joker outfit from the original film, while Lady Gaga can be seen wearing makeup on her face and a shirt that’s reminiscent of Harley Quinn’s diamond checkered pattern outfit from her other iterations.

The upcoming historical drama will be directed by Ridley Scott, who previously made movies like Alien, Blade Runner, and Gladiator. It stars Joaquin Phoenix as the Emperor of the French during his “rise to power through the lens of his addictive and volatile relationship with Empress Joséphine,” according to the synopsis.

According to an interview from La Reppublica (via World of Reel), the film is a contemporary western that takes place in a fictional copper mining town in New Mexico during the pandemic.

In a Reddit AMA, he said, “Although it’s sort of a – I don’t know if you’d call it a revisionist western. It’s contemporary; one foot is in the western and one foot is even more heavily in the noir genre. So it’s like a film noir ensemble western dark comedy.”

Based on Patrick Dewitt’s acclaimed novel of the same name, The Sisters Brothers follows two brothers – Eli and Charlie Sisters – who are hired to kill a prospector who has stolen from their boss. The story, a genre-hybrid with comedic elements, takes place in Oregon in 1851. The film is Jacques Audiard’s follow-up to his Palme D’Or Winning Dheepan, which premiered at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.

The film stars Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the Line, Her, The Master) and John C. Reilly (Step Brothers, Wreck-It Ralph) as the Sister Brothers, and joining them in the film are Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler, Prisoners), and Riz Ahmed (Rogue One, Four Lions). Audiard penned the script with Thomas Bidegain.

The Sisters Brothers will arrive in theaters later this year.
