Surprise horror sequel The Nun 2, the latest Conjuring spin-off, scared its way to the top of the domestic box office with a solid $32.6 million haul, per Deadline. That opening lands in the middle of the pack for the James Wan horror franchise, below Annabelle: Creation ($35M) but above The Curse of La Llorona ($26M), The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It ($24M), and Annabelle Comes Home ($20M).

Globally, the horror pic scared up $85M. Audiences awarded The Nun 2 a C+, better than the C given to its predecessor, which grossed $363M worldwide after a $53M debut.

Also opening this week was the comedy My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, which collected $10M from 3,650 screens. That’s below the $17M earned by My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 in 2016 and obviously much bigger than the $597K made by the original back in 2002. However, that film became a worldwide phenomenon, grossing an astonishing $375M. The sequel only accrued $92M. Weird how this franchise fizzled.

Last week’s champ, The Equalizer 3, dipped 65% for a $12.1M sophomore frame, bringing its domestic total to $61.9M. Globally, the threequel zipped past the $100M mark and might reach the $190M attained by its predecessors.

Summer champs Barbie and Oppenheimer continued to do big business. The former has now topped $1.4B at the global box office, while Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster surpassed $900M.

Gran Turismo, a racing film inspired by a video game of the same name, narrowly beating out Barbie for the No. 1 spot at the box office, according to data from BoxOfficeMojo, bringing in $17.3 million compared to the Greta Gerwig-directed hit’s $17.1 million.

box office

Gran Turismo’s $17.3 million premiere weekend includes about $3.9 million (according to The Hollywood Reporter) or $5.3 million (according to Variety) from weekends of early showings and fan showings that served as promotion, which is common industry practice, after the racing movie’s premiere date was pushed back because of the actors’ strike and press tour limits.

Barbie brought in $17.1 million on its sixth weekend in theaters and is rapidly nearing the $600 million mark for domestic revenue.

box office

Blue Beetle—the 14th installment of the DC Extended Universe—brought in $12.8 million and was third for the weekend, dropping two spots from its premiere last week in which it knocked Barbie from No. 1 for the first time since its opening.

box office

Oppenheimer continued to have success in theaters for the sixth week, as well, collecting $9 million and making the film Christopher Nolan’s third-highest grossing, according to The Hollywood Reporter; Oppenheimer also surpassed $300 million domestically this weekend.

It took a month, but Barbie finally fell off her perch atop the domestic box office. Blue Beetle, the latest offering from the DC universe, leaped to No. 1 with a $25.4 million domestic bow, per Deadline — a meager opening for the superhero pic and the lowest for a DCEU offering to date. The figure comes in higher than Wonder Woman 1984’s $16.7M and a tad lower than The Suicide Squad’s $26.2M, but remember, those pics were released on HBO Max during the pandemic. Blue Beetle couldn’t even match Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ $30.1M, a film that finished with $167M worldwide.

The only other new release was Universal’s R-rated comedy Strays, featuring the voices of Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx, which crashed and burned with $8.3M.

Otherwise, Barbie came in at No. 2 with $21.5M, bringing its domestic total to $567M and worldwide cume to $1.279 billion, making it Warner Bros.’s top-grossing movie of all time.

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer also continues to rake in the moola, bringing in another $10.6M, raising its total to $285.2M domestic and $717.8M worldwide. It is now the highest-grossing film not to reach No. 1 at the domestic box office and currently stands as the fifth highest-grossing R-rated picture of all time worldwide behind Joker ($1.066B), Deadpool 2 ($786M), Deadpool ($781M), and The Matrix Reloaded ($738M). By next week, it will have surpassed the worldwide total of Nolan’s Inception ($728M) to become the director’s third biggest feature.

Barbie, Mission Impossible, Oppenheimer who? This summer is all about the crazy global box office success of the VERY B movie feeling Meg 2: The Trench.

It continues to go ‘deep’ into the pockets of movie goers internationally and make a killing. While it isn’t a domestic (USA) box-office success (only doing $66 million), it just swam past the $300 million mark with $316 million total.

That still puts it lower than The Meg, which ended on a worldwide haul of $527 million. The point worth making there is it did far better in the US, and the Chinese market was in a healthier state for Western movie releases then.

Meg 2: The Trench has actually bucked the trend of low-performing Western movies in China, and that has contributed to a healthier outlook for the movie than expected. As with the first movie, it is a joint production between US and Chinese companies, so that may have helped it a little.

It quickly went past Insidious: The Red Door to become the highest-grossing genre movie of 2023. It now nearly earned twice the amount that movie did.

Meg 2: The Trench is very loosely based on the Steve Alten novel of the same name, and sees Jason Statham returning as Jonas Taylor, a deep-sea Navy diver defined by his repeated encounters with the supposedly extinct Megalodon shark.

Looks like DC might have a hit on their hands as it is expected that Blue Beetle will finally dethrone Barbie as the weekend box office champion.

The DC superhero film features Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, a recent college graduate who becomes a superhero. The film opens on August 18, 2023, and is expected to overtake Barbie at the box office. For context, the Margot Robbie-led comedy movie is entering its fifth weekend in theaters and has been at the top of the domestic box office sales for four consecutive weekends.

Blue Beetle is projected to earn $25 to 32 million in its opening weekend, which would overtake Barbie’s projected $17 to 20 million. Barbie’s box office has been a massive success, becoming Warner Bros.’ highest-grossing domestic release of all time, recently passing The Dark Knight.

The film stars Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, with a supporting cast including Susan Sarandon, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, and Becky G.

Dubbed “Barbieheimer’, both films went nuclear at the box office this weekend!

Director Greta Gerwig’s Barbie opened to a historic $155 million domestically, well ahead of an expected $90 million to $110 million and helped fuel one of the biggest weekends in box office history.

Barbie — which brings to life Mattel’s iconic fashion doll — is also strutting to big numbers overseas. The pic launched to an impressive $182 million from 70 markets for a global bow of $337 million against a $145 million production budget. It scored the biggest opening ever for a WB title in major markets, including Mexico ($22.3 million), Brazil ($15.9 million) and Australia ($14.6 million). The U.K. led with $22.9 million, the biggest showing for the studio since the pandemic. Barbie wasn’t expected to make a big splash in Asian markets, although it did do better than expected in China with $8.2 million.

In North America, Barbie scored the biggest domestic start ever for a movie directed by a woman, solo or otherwise. The solo crown previously belonged to Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman, which started off with $103.3 million domestically in 2017. In 2019, the Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck-directed Captain Marvel opened to $153 million.

It also marks the biggest opening for Barbie stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the biggest three-day opening for a movie based on a toy — eclipsing Transformers: Dark of the Moon ($115.9 million) — and Warners’ biggest opening for a non-D.C. pic or a sequel.

Meanwhile the historical film about J. Robert Oppenheimer and the making of the atomic bomb came in well ahead of expectations with $80.5 million. That’s director Christopher Nolan’s third-biggest domestic debut behind The Dark Knight Rises ($160.9 million) and The Dark Knight ($158.4 million), not adjusted for inflation.

Other stats: Oppenheimer ranks as the third-biggest opening ever for a biographical film in North America behind American Sniper ($89.3 million) and The Passion of the Christ ($83.8 million), not adjusted for inflation.

Overseas, Oppenheimer launched with a strong $93.7 million from 78 markets for a global start of $174.2 million against a $100 million production budget. The film was Nolan’s biggest non-superhero opening in no fewer than 55 markets.
