It took a month, but Barbie finally fell off her perch atop the domestic box office. Blue Beetle, the latest offering from the DC universe, leaped to No. 1 with a $25.4 million domestic bow, per Deadline — a meager opening for the superhero pic and the lowest for a DCEU offering to date. The figure comes in higher than Wonder Woman 1984’s $16.7M and a tad lower than The Suicide Squad’s $26.2M, but remember, those pics were released on HBO Max during the pandemic. Blue Beetle couldn’t even match Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ $30.1M, a film that finished with $167M worldwide.

The only other new release was Universal’s R-rated comedy Strays, featuring the voices of Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx, which crashed and burned with $8.3M.

Otherwise, Barbie came in at No. 2 with $21.5M, bringing its domestic total to $567M and worldwide cume to $1.279 billion, making it Warner Bros.’s top-grossing movie of all time.

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer also continues to rake in the moola, bringing in another $10.6M, raising its total to $285.2M domestic and $717.8M worldwide. It is now the highest-grossing film not to reach No. 1 at the domestic box office and currently stands as the fifth highest-grossing R-rated picture of all time worldwide behind Joker ($1.066B), Deadpool 2 ($786M), Deadpool ($781M), and The Matrix Reloaded ($738M). By next week, it will have surpassed the worldwide total of Nolan’s Inception ($728M) to become the director’s third biggest feature.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter has unleashed Dracula in a new clip from the upcoming horror retelling of the Bram Stoker novel, courtesy of Universal Pictures.

The film, starring Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones) and Corey Hawkins (24), looks to bring to the big screen one of the most terrifying adaptations of Dracula lore with a crew setting sail with the Prince of Darkness as cargo.

Check it out below:

About The Last Voyage of the Demeter:

Based on a single chilling chapter from Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula, The Last Voyage of the Demeter is directed by André Øvredal (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark) from a screenplay written by Zak Olkewicz, Bragi Schut, and Stefan Ruzowitzky. It stars Corey Hawkins (In the Heights) as Clemens, a doctor who joins the Demeter crew, Aisling Franciosi (The Nightingale) as an unwitting stowaway, Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones) as the ship’s captain and David Dastmalchian (the Ant-Man franchise) as the Demeter’s first mate.

“The film tells the terrifying story of the merchant ship Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo—fifty unmarked wooden crates—from Carpathia to London,” reads the synopsis. “Strange events befall the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a merciless presence onboard the ship. When the Demeter finally arrives off the shores of England, it is a charred, derelict wreck. There is no trace of the crew.

Additional cast includes Jon Jon Briones (American Horror Story), Stefan Kapicic (Deadpool films), Nikolai Nikolaeff (Stranger Things) and Javier Botet (It films, Mama). It is produced by Brad Fischer, Mike Medavoy, and Arnold Messer, with Matthew Hirsch set as an executive producer.

According to Deadline, Jeremy Renner (Avengers, Wind River) has officially been cast in the role of Detective “Twitch” Williams for the upcoming Todd McFarlane ‘Spawn’ reboot and will join Jamie Foxx who has been cast in the title role of the demonic superhero.

“As a first time director, I wanted to surround myself with the most talent and the most skilled people I can on all fronts,” McFarlane said. “I was lucky enough to land Jason Blum and then Jamie Foxx, and I knew the person on screen the most is this police officer, Twitch Williams. We needed as strong a person as possible because he will be the face of the film. I took my naïve Hollywood approach again, and said let’s start at the top and work down. Jeremy was at the top. I’m a huge fan of his. The character doesn’t need to be a bodybuilder or GQ handsome. I was looking for somebody who’s a person you’ve met before; I needed someone who can pull off the grief of an average human being. I’ve seen Jeremy do that in more than a few of his movies. He was at the top of my list, just like Jamie.”

Producer Jason Blum added: “Jeremy is the ideal choice for Twitch Williams. He radiates honesty, intelligence and a hard-working, everyman charisma, the same qualities that make Twitch such a compelling character.”

Creator Todd McFarlane will write and direct the Spawn reboot, which he is claiming will be “dark and R-rated,” even going so far as to say that it would be a harder R than Deadpool.

First appearing in 1992’s Spawn #1, the character quickly became the symbol for 1990s comics dark and brutal antiheroes. His Hellspawn powers allow him to teleport, shape shift, and utilize a variety of weapons (notably chains) in combat. Spawn previously made the leap to the big screen in 1997 with Michael Jai White in the title role and then on television as an HBO animated miniseries, titled Todd McFarlane’s Spawn. The character recently celebrated his 25th anniversary, and will hit over 300 issues sometime next year, taking the record from “Cerebus the Aardvark” of the longest running independent comic book ever published.
