Produced by MGM, the film sees action star Jason Statham as a retired beekeeper with a secret look for vengeance against a multi-billion dollar company scamming people out of their money.

David Ayer has directed films such as Training Day, Bright, End of Watch and Fury. But he is most known for the failed Suicide Squad film which continues to have rumors about Warner Bros releasing an Ayer Cut similar to the Snyder Cut of Justice League years later.

About the film:

Starring alonside Statham, The Beekeeper also stars Emmy Raver-Lampman, Josh Hutcherson, Bobby Naderi, Minnie Driver, Phylicia Rashad, and Jeremy Irons.

“In The Beekeeper, one man’s brutal campaign for vengeance takes on national stakes after he is revealed to be a former operative of a powerful and clandestine organization known as Beekeepers,” the official synopsis reads.

The Beekeeper marks Ayer’s first directorial effort since 2020’s The Tax Collector. He’s also known for directing 2012’s End of Watch, 2014’s Sabotage, 2014’s Fury, 2016’s Suicide Squad, and 2017’s Bright.

With a script by Kurt Wimmer (Expend4bles, Salt), The Beekeeper is produced by Statham, Ayer, Bill Block, Chris Long, and Wimmer. Andrew Golov, Thom Zadra, and Mark Birmingham serve as executive producers.

The Beekeeper comes after a busy 2023 for Statham, as the Transporter actor has starred in a number of films released in the past year. He played a major role in Guy Ritchie’s Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, which came out in March in the United States, before he then reprised his role as Deckard Shaw in Fast X. Following that, Statham starred in Meg 2: The Trench, a sequel to 2018’s The Meg that was directed by Ben Wheatley. He also returned to the character of Lee Christmas in Expend4bles, which is still playing in theaters.

The Beekeeper arrives in theaters on January 12, 2024, from MGM.

Director Gabe Polsky’s film, having had its world premiere at last year’s Toronto Film Festival, stars the Academy Award winning actor as an obsessive hunter named Miller who knows of a remote valley in the Colorado Rockies teeming with thousands of buffalo. An obsessed Miller convinces a young Harvard dropout named Will Andrews, played by Fred Hechinger, to finance what proves to be an extremely hazardous trip.

“This film has been many years in the making, and after an epically challenging shoot and a world premiere at TIFF, I’m so excited that now is the time for the world to see it,” Polsky says in an exclusive statement provided to EW. “Audiences are in for a harrowing journey and an enigmatic Nicolas Cage performance that explores the nature of ambition — the powerful and destructive energy that has shaped America and our planet.”

While attending the film’s TIFF premiere in 2022, Cage revealed that his performance was partly inspired by a certain NBA megastar. “Gabe Polsky wanted me to shave the head because he was thinking about Michael Jordan,” the actor told EW at the time. “Michael Jordan on the court, and that need to win. Isn’t that in Miller? The need to score, to win. I started thinking about it.”

Cage admitted his look might also owe a little to Marlon Brando’s Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now. “There is a kind of Joseph Conrad, Kurtz view by way of Coppola’s Apocalypse Now appearance to the shaved head,” Cage said. “It sort of works. It coalesces. It could be both. It could be Michael Jordan meets Marlon Brando in Apocalypse Now.”

The cast of Butcher’s Crossing also includes Rachel Keller, Xander Berkeley, Jeremy Bobb, and Paul Raci. The movie will be released in theaters through Saban Films nationwide this Oct. 20.

The only other new release was Universal’s R-rated comedy Strays, featuring the voices of Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx, which crashed and burned with $8.3M.

Otherwise, Barbie came in at No. 2 with $21.5M, bringing its domestic total to $567M and worldwide cume to $1.279 billion, making it Warner Bros.’s top-grossing movie of all time.

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer also continues to rake in the moola, bringing in another $10.6M, raising its total to $285.2M domestic and $717.8M worldwide. It is now the highest-grossing film not to reach No. 1 at the domestic box office and currently stands as the fifth highest-grossing R-rated picture of all time worldwide behind Joker ($1.066B), Deadpool 2 ($786M), Deadpool ($781M), and The Matrix Reloaded ($738M). By next week, it will have surpassed the worldwide total of Nolan’s Inception ($728M) to become the director’s third biggest feature.

It continues to go ‘deep’ into the pockets of movie goers internationally and make a killing. While it isn’t a domestic (USA) box-office success (only doing $66 million), it just swam past the $300 million mark with $316 million total.

That still puts it lower than The Meg, which ended on a worldwide haul of $527 million. The point worth making there is it did far better in the US, and the Chinese market was in a healthier state for Western movie releases then.

Meg 2: The Trench has actually bucked the trend of low-performing Western movies in China, and that has contributed to a healthier outlook for the movie than expected. As with the first movie, it is a joint production between US and Chinese companies, so that may have helped it a little.

It quickly went past Insidious: The Red Door to become the highest-grossing genre movie of 2023. It now nearly earned twice the amount that movie did.

Meg 2: The Trench is very loosely based on the Steve Alten novel of the same name, and sees Jason Statham returning as Jonas Taylor, a deep-sea Navy diver defined by his repeated encounters with the supposedly extinct Megalodon shark.

The mega-shark sequel has found its audience in China where it has made $53 million of its $150 million worldwide box office. That’s over a 1/3 of the film’s revenue which is extremely impressive.

To compare, The Meg made $153 million in China in 2018, contributing a sizeable portion of its eventual $530 million haul worldwide. the film is a relative anomaly by today’s standards and actually outperformed the first film’s opening there.

Domestically the monster blockbuster has made just $37 million so far, but has faced stiff competition from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and the twin terrors of Barbie and Oppenheimer.

This is the scene that officially made all of us afraid of the ocean and introduced a real fear of sharks for many. Jaws is one of the greatest movies of all time and you can’t have a legitimate best list for sharks without it being number one.

2. The Shallows – Surfer’s Shark Week Moment

This movie is just fantastic and really helped bring a new vision to the shark movie genre. It’s simple, it’s effective, and it brought one of the craziest shark attacks to be seen on film.

In the film, Blake Lively stars as a young med school dropout who goes surfing at a secluded beach. After being chomped on by a shark, she must figure out how to survive and get to safety. Rent it here.

3. Deep Blue Sea – “Samuel Jackson’s Motivational Speech…..In Front Of A Shark Pit”

Well, who saw that coming? Answer: No one. This scene is still discussed and talked about in many circles when it comes to shocking death scenes with major Hollywood A-listers. In the film, Samuel L. Jackson is in a starring role about sharks helping to solve Alzheimer’s when all hell breaks lose on an underwater compound in the middle of the ocean. When he tries to help their struggle…..well, just watch.

4. Soul Surfer – Peek A Boo, Arm Is Gone

Even though this is a true story, the way they decided to film this is pretty hilarious. Literally, didn’t give any real lead up, tension or anything other than the shark that took Bethany Hamilton out of nowhere. Overall, this isn’t a great shark attack, just bizarre and funny.

5. The Meg – All Fun And Games Until There’s a Bigger Meg

Ok, we had to put this one in there since The Meg 2: The Trench is officially in theaters and actually crushing it internationally. China alone will easily allow the sequel to be profitable. But, give the scene some credit as it brought a nice twist for the film along with boat destruction.

6. Jaws – Farewell and adieu to you, fair Spanish Quint

Amazing scene for what it was back in 1976. All you really need to remember on this scene was the song Sam Quint sings earlier in the film.

7. The Black Demon (2023) – Boat Launch

This movie recently popped up on all the streaming channels promoting Josh Lucas (Yellowstone) so it had to be watched for this list. While it’s not great, the actors really give it their all. Check out the boat scene which makes this list at the 3:30 mark above.

8. Open Water – Sharks Attack At Night

This scene helped remind everyone that you don’t want to be in the water at night because sharks still attack at night. That is obvious but it really was the first film to show this on camera and remember the audiences of this.
