Margot Robbie’s barbie look in the film goes all the way back to the famed doll’s debut in 1959 with a striped swimsuit and white cat-eyed sunglasses. The first Barbie was styled as a “teenage fashion model”: her look paid tribute to the Old Hollywood glamour of 1950s icons like Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth.

With her red lips and blonde ponytail, Robbie’s recreation of the key toy is amazing.

Ryan Gosling as Ken

Ryan Gosling’s blond hair and tanned skin resembles a large majority Ken dolls since the male counterpart first hit shelves in 1961, but one version stands out as a possible plastic twin. On-screen Ken’s cool, coastal vibe matches that of the “Sun Lovin’ Malibu” iteration manufactured in 1979.

Michael Cera as Allan

Yes, this was an actual Barbie. Cera’s collared striped shirt Allan stole the show in all his scenes that he was in and guess what….it’s a real barbie. He was Ken’s buddy who was introduced in 1964.

Emerald Fennell as Midge

Knocked Up Barbie Midge! Barbie’s pregnant pal with her red locks, her purple dress and, of course, her baby bump, Emerald Fennell’s character looks just like the doll that was pulled from shelves in 2003. Midge was actually part of the Mattel franchise long before to her time with child, first appearing in 1963 as a friend of Barbie’s.

Issa Rae as President Barbie

In ‘Barbie’, Issa Rae’s character is president, but in real life, Barbie has been running for office since 1992. During her first campaign, the feminine figurine was sold with a patriotic inaugural ball gown and a skirt suit option (for her in-office affairs).

The Mattel-made politician continues to evolve with every election year: in 2004, Barbie got a pantsuit makeover (as pictured), and two Barbies ran on an all-female ticket in 2016. During the 2020 presidential race, the toy company released a four-doll Campaign Team set with a Black Barbie candidate, a campaign manager, a fundraiser and a voter.

Kate McKinnon as Weird Barbie

Kate McKinnon was the other Barbie who stole the show along with Michael Cera’s Allan. Her cropped destroyed haircut looks like an evil child armed with scissors did it, and the colors across her face suggest that markers were involved. McKinnon’s tagline — “This Barbie is always in the splits” — suggests the same. This doll isn’t Mattel-made, but a mangled Barbie is as recognizable as any signature figurine.

Director Greta Gerwig’s Barbie opened to a historic $155 million domestically, well ahead of an expected $90 million to $110 million and helped fuel one of the biggest weekends in box office history.

Barbie — which brings to life Mattel’s iconic fashion doll — is also strutting to big numbers overseas. The pic launched to an impressive $182 million from 70 markets for a global bow of $337 million against a $145 million production budget. It scored the biggest opening ever for a WB title in major markets, including Mexico ($22.3 million), Brazil ($15.9 million) and Australia ($14.6 million). The U.K. led with $22.9 million, the biggest showing for the studio since the pandemic. Barbie wasn’t expected to make a big splash in Asian markets, although it did do better than expected in China with $8.2 million.

In North America, Barbie scored the biggest domestic start ever for a movie directed by a woman, solo or otherwise. The solo crown previously belonged to Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman, which started off with $103.3 million domestically in 2017. In 2019, the Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck-directed Captain Marvel opened to $153 million.

It also marks the biggest opening for Barbie stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the biggest three-day opening for a movie based on a toy — eclipsing Transformers: Dark of the Moon ($115.9 million) — and Warners’ biggest opening for a non-D.C. pic or a sequel.

Meanwhile the historical film about J. Robert Oppenheimer and the making of the atomic bomb came in well ahead of expectations with $80.5 million. That’s director Christopher Nolan’s third-biggest domestic debut behind The Dark Knight Rises ($160.9 million) and The Dark Knight ($158.4 million), not adjusted for inflation.

Other stats: Oppenheimer ranks as the third-biggest opening ever for a biographical film in North America behind American Sniper ($89.3 million) and The Passion of the Christ ($83.8 million), not adjusted for inflation.

Overseas, Oppenheimer launched with a strong $93.7 million from 78 markets for a global start of $174.2 million against a $100 million production budget. The film was Nolan’s biggest non-superhero opening in no fewer than 55 markets.

Writer Josh Singer explained what his vision of the film about Armstrong’s life was going to portray:

“This is 100 percent a mission movie. It’s about going to the moon as seen through the eyes of the guy who got there,” Singer said. “We have at least five major set pieces that are action, and if your heart rate doesn’t go through the roof, if you’re not gripping the edge of your seat the entire times, I’ll be shocked.”

The images show Armstrong’s relationship to his first wife Janet (Claire Foy) and preparing for space travel. When it comes to playing Armstrong, Chazelle tells People that Gosling captured the private, quiet personality of the pioneering astronaut:

“Neil was not a showy person. A lot of the other astronauts and pilots of that era were what you expect, the outgoing, hotshot types, but Neil was very different. He was the brainier, quieter, more introverted person and he’s a man of few words who did the job and got it done. I see a little bit of Ryan in that as well and I think Ryan was able to capture it beautifully.”

However, Chazelle does say his film isn’t going the traditional biopic route and that audiences should be prepared for the unexpected:

“Ryan and I described the movie to each other as it’s about the moon and the kitchen, which means basically we wanted to tell the story about one of the most epic accomplishments in human history, but root it very much in the intimate and the day to day details of what it was actually like.” he says. “What did it feel like to be Neil or Janet at that moment in time and going through these truly superhuman kind of events.
