Gran Turismo, a racing film inspired by a video game of the same name, narrowly beating out Barbie for the No. 1 spot at the box office, according to data from BoxOfficeMojo, bringing in $17.3 million compared to the Greta Gerwig-directed hit’s $17.1 million.

box office

Gran Turismo’s $17.3 million premiere weekend includes about $3.9 million (according to The Hollywood Reporter) or $5.3 million (according to Variety) from weekends of early showings and fan showings that served as promotion, which is common industry practice, after the racing movie’s premiere date was pushed back because of the actors’ strike and press tour limits.

Barbie brought in $17.1 million on its sixth weekend in theaters and is rapidly nearing the $600 million mark for domestic revenue.

box office

Blue Beetle—the 14th installment of the DC Extended Universe—brought in $12.8 million and was third for the weekend, dropping two spots from its premiere last week in which it knocked Barbie from No. 1 for the first time since its opening.

box office

Oppenheimer continued to have success in theaters for the sixth week, as well, collecting $9 million and making the film Christopher Nolan’s third-highest grossing, according to The Hollywood Reporter; Oppenheimer also surpassed $300 million domestically this weekend.

It took a month, but Barbie finally fell off her perch atop the domestic box office. Blue Beetle, the latest offering from the DC universe, leaped to No. 1 with a $25.4 million domestic bow, per Deadline — a meager opening for the superhero pic and the lowest for a DCEU offering to date. The figure comes in higher than Wonder Woman 1984’s $16.7M and a tad lower than The Suicide Squad’s $26.2M, but remember, those pics were released on HBO Max during the pandemic. Blue Beetle couldn’t even match Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ $30.1M, a film that finished with $167M worldwide.

The only other new release was Universal’s R-rated comedy Strays, featuring the voices of Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx, which crashed and burned with $8.3M.

Otherwise, Barbie came in at No. 2 with $21.5M, bringing its domestic total to $567M and worldwide cume to $1.279 billion, making it Warner Bros.’s top-grossing movie of all time.

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer also continues to rake in the moola, bringing in another $10.6M, raising its total to $285.2M domestic and $717.8M worldwide. It is now the highest-grossing film not to reach No. 1 at the domestic box office and currently stands as the fifth highest-grossing R-rated picture of all time worldwide behind Joker ($1.066B), Deadpool 2 ($786M), Deadpool ($781M), and The Matrix Reloaded ($738M). By next week, it will have surpassed the worldwide total of Nolan’s Inception ($728M) to become the director’s third biggest feature.

Dubbed “Barbieheimer’, both films went nuclear at the box office this weekend!

Director Greta Gerwig’s Barbie opened to a historic $155 million domestically, well ahead of an expected $90 million to $110 million and helped fuel one of the biggest weekends in box office history.

Barbie — which brings to life Mattel’s iconic fashion doll — is also strutting to big numbers overseas. The pic launched to an impressive $182 million from 70 markets for a global bow of $337 million against a $145 million production budget. It scored the biggest opening ever for a WB title in major markets, including Mexico ($22.3 million), Brazil ($15.9 million) and Australia ($14.6 million). The U.K. led with $22.9 million, the biggest showing for the studio since the pandemic. Barbie wasn’t expected to make a big splash in Asian markets, although it did do better than expected in China with $8.2 million.

In North America, Barbie scored the biggest domestic start ever for a movie directed by a woman, solo or otherwise. The solo crown previously belonged to Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman, which started off with $103.3 million domestically in 2017. In 2019, the Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck-directed Captain Marvel opened to $153 million.

It also marks the biggest opening for Barbie stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the biggest three-day opening for a movie based on a toy — eclipsing Transformers: Dark of the Moon ($115.9 million) — and Warners’ biggest opening for a non-D.C. pic or a sequel.

Meanwhile the historical film about J. Robert Oppenheimer and the making of the atomic bomb came in well ahead of expectations with $80.5 million. That’s director Christopher Nolan’s third-biggest domestic debut behind The Dark Knight Rises ($160.9 million) and The Dark Knight ($158.4 million), not adjusted for inflation.

Other stats: Oppenheimer ranks as the third-biggest opening ever for a biographical film in North America behind American Sniper ($89.3 million) and The Passion of the Christ ($83.8 million), not adjusted for inflation.

Overseas, Oppenheimer launched with a strong $93.7 million from 78 markets for a global start of $174.2 million against a $100 million production budget. The film was Nolan’s biggest non-superhero opening in no fewer than 55 markets.
